Open Systems Engineer II:

The Open Systems Engineer II position will be working with the Engineer for open systems team. Open systems engineers manage Solaris, Linux, Virtualization (VMware) and Enterprise Monitoring. Primarily responsible for consistent and stable systems. Engineers design and support all systems for development, quality assurance, user acceptance, staging and production environments. Specify system and software for standardization. Develop solutions for complex issues utilizing open systems approach. Provides 24x7 deep technical support on Unix and/or Linux systems related issues. Troubleshoots Unix and/or Linux systems problems. Operates under general supervision. Reports to the team lead and/or Manager of Open Systems.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Operating Systems: Understand Linux fundamentals. Configure network settings including bonding for high availability. Configure firewalls (iptables) settings. Install OS via kickstart / jumpstart.

2. Hardware: Understand network infrastructures. Update device firmware. Familiar with blades and chassis. Configure console for out of bound access. Understanding of x86 CMOS, SCSI, SATA, CPU, RAM for blades and stand alone systems.

3. Scripting: Execute scripts developed by seniors. Write self documenting scripts for day to day use. Develop cross platform scripting understanding.

4. Package Management: Perform various queries against installed packages. Basic familiarity with industry tools. Install packages for RedHat Linux and Solaris.

5. Monitoring: Perform trend analysis. Recommend changes to team lead or manager.

6. Virtualization: Functional in VMware environment. Build and release virtual machines as necessary. Install and maintain VMware management tools.

7. Storage: Comfortable with NAS and FC storage and multipathing. Experience with NetApp and EMC a plus.

8. Security: Configure host firewall. Produce network traffic dumps. Limited analysis of network dumps. Execute vulnerability remediation plans. Stay abreast of company policies and industry best practices.

9. Tools: Experience and demonstrated skills with ssh, sudo, iptables, LVM, Ethernet bonding, WebSphere/JBoss,

10. Scope: Estimate and manage time for self. Deliver on-time and on-budget.

11. Role: plan at task level. Attend project meeting as supporting team member. Implementor.

12. Business: Strong sense of ownership. Self starter. Keep up to date on technology.

Qualifications

Bachelor degree in Computer Science or related field.

Possesses 5-7 years of experience in systems administration or a related field.

Must have complete understanding of Linux fundamentals along with several years experience working with Linux.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Excellent knowledge of Unix and or Linux systems, scripting, job estimating and task/project juggling essential. Knowledge of network protocols and standards such as TCP/IP and DNS. Excellent mathematical, communication, and interpersonal skills. RHCE a plus.

Servers, blades, disk, SAN, tape drives and various software applications.
