Job Description:
The Lead Software Engineer will be a senior member on the team, responsible for leading, guiding and mentoring a team of engineers in the design and development of application software within the College Board's Business Applications group. The successful candidate will be a seasoned software engineer with leadership skills and successful experiences leading a team of software engineers.
The candidate will interact closely with project management and software engineers to shape, identify, prioritize, and realize project requirements in the delivery of business solutions.
Successful candidates will have extensive knowledge and experience in designing and building complex, highly scalable and dependable application systems using .NET based technologies as well as a comprehensive knowledge of rich client, web front-end and back-end development tools, technologies, practices, and standards; proven ability to integrate large scale systems or third party products; and a track record of delivering high-quality business solutions in a timely and effective manner.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
· Leadership, guidance, and direction for all members of the application development team, assuring standards and best practices are met.
· Works closely with project management and requirements analysts to thoroughly understand the system requirements and ensure they are properly implemented. Also must seek ways to meet the underlying business requirements with low-cost, yet highly re-usable patterns and actively escalate requirements that may cause unnecessary risk or cost.
· Assists Project Manager in project planning, estimating and risk management. Develops, maintains and monitors schedule/iteration plans for the software engineers coordinating activities with other team leads.
· Responsible for support of and coordinating with other Engineers, Architects and teams including other technology teams such as a User Experience team or an infrastructure team.
· Assists Project Manager in performance evaluations of the development staff. Reports hours daily to administration for billing purposes.
· Follows established coding standards and other group procedures, both individually and at a team level. Must ensure proper code reviews are held for the project and that development processes and tool utilization (e.g. Cruise Control.NET, nDepend, FxCop, etc.) are followed.
· Contributes to the engineering team's culture of high code quality. Ultimately accountable for the quality of code that gets delivered to QA and production and must ensure that code reviews and unit testing are adequately performed.
· Ensures that continuous integration is performed on the application source code and constantly seeks to enhance the continuous integration methods of the development team to ensure extremely high quality of code.
· Experience and in-depth knowledge of infrastructure components including IIS and SQL Server RDBMS.
· Expert-level Object Oriented knowledge, with demonstrated complex implementations a must, e.g., custom API's, optimization techniques, and design patterns.
· Ensure that application code adheres to enterprise and industry standards and best practices, including performance and security standards.
· Gather feedback from design and technical staff on application development needs and patterns. Must be able to work with Enterprise Architecture group to propose and solicit approval of new architectural patterns including documentation and presentation of the architectural approach, benefits/limitations and other considerations (e.g. re-usability, security, performance, maintainability, etc.).
· Thorough understanding of implementing accessibility and progressive enhancement presentation layer coding practices. Works with Interface Design Architects to assure accessibility standards are met at a code level.
Required Skills:
· Effective communication skills are a must along with a strong customer service orientation, and the ability to clearly discern client needs
· Ability to focus on the goals of quality, time and budget
· Experience leading small teams of software engineers
· Experience developing, maintaining and controlling schedule/iteration plans
· Experience working in an iterative development environment (familiarity withRUP and/or Agile/Scrum is a plus)
· Experience in establishing software development guidelines and in performing code and design reviews
· Experience in documenting design and architecture artifacts and presenting artifacts for architectural review
· Ability to handle multiple projects and assignments simultaneously and effectively in a cross-functional team environment
· Strong problem solving and analytic skills
· Expert understanding of .NET programming language and related optimization techniques
· Functional understanding of prevalent design patterns, including MVC/MVVM
· 7 years of VB.Net/C#, and ASP.Net development experience
· 7 years experience with .NET 3.5 and 4.0
· 7 years of experience using CSS, HTML, and JavaScript (jQuery a plus)
· Working knowledge of .NET generics and LINQ
· SOA, web services, WCF, XML, SOAP/REST experience
· Test-driven development and continuous integration experience is preferred
