Role descriptions / Expectations from the Role

Essential Functions

• Architecting, Implementing, Deploying Nimsoft Monitor, Unified Reporter, Robots, Probe Packs, etc. in a service provider and large enterprise environments.
• Monitoring Cloud/Virtualization Infrastructure Platforms – specifically setting up management/monitoring for Cisco UCS Blade Chassis/vCards and Fabric Interconnects in service provider and large enterprise environments.
• Monitoring of Other Relevant Cloud/Virtualization Infrastructure Platforms such as Dell vStart may be useful, demonstrate adequate skill/knowledge/experience.
• Integrate/monitor embedded mgmt platforms for these platforms into other monitoring systems, preferably Nimsoft, and/or other IT systems.
• Monitoring Virtual Server Environments – specifically vmware Vsphere and all relevant components in service provider and large enterprise environments.
• Integrate/monitor various management/monitoring Vsphere components with other monitoring systems, preferably Nimsoft, and/or other IT systems.
• Service/Network monitoring application management and basic server administration

• Agent/Agentless/Client-Based server/application fault/perf monitoring methods and systems
• SNMP Agent based fault/perf monitoring methods and systems

• Manage/configure complex alarm and reporting thresholds/rules within monitoring applications
• Rules based alarm/incident data and work flow/processes
• Apply monitoring system/data integration methods
• Development using Shell scripting/PERL/PHP/HTML/XML/SOAP/REST/JavaScript or other relevant methods/languages
• Alarm and report presentation within service/network monitoring applications
• Addressing/resolving any monitoring application user or system troubles including those that require vendor support
• Configure and manage all aspects of Brother Display/Network hosts
• Manage the Netcool integration rules responsible for generating alarms in Netcool from Big Brother, and Service Event tickets in Remedy
• Create and test custom monitoring scripts, and rollout BigBro DPKG's without assistance from other SA SME's
• Implement basic change requests

• Configuration of simple metric/reporting thresholds/rules within monitoring applications
• Adding/removing/changing node attribute values within monitoring applications

• Data Collection from various databases
• Application of Statistical Concepts / Analysis

• Service incident and problem management processes and reporting
• Addressing/resolving basic application user and system troubles
• Documentation of algorithms, alarms, thresholds, service definitions, rules, etc.

• Document monitoring algorithms, alarms, thresholds, service definitions and rules
• Monitor Systems using various tactics, such as, automated system alert, log file searches and manual spot checks
• Produce and distribute daily health status report, and notify/escalate any identified problem

Attributes of the successful candidate

• Must be very familiar with enterprise or MSPs architecture environment and related technology
• Minimum 3 years' experience with IT Production environments as "Monitoring Engineer, Lead Monitoring Engineer, Implementation Manager, Sr. Service Delivery Engineer, etc."
• Solid understanding of monitoring-related network and systems management protocols such as HTTP/HTTPS, SNMP, RDP, SSH, LDAP, WMI, IMAP/POP, ICMP, FTP, TELNET, SMTP, DNS, etc. and how to monitor their health and efficiency.
• Working knowledge of Core Java/J2EE and java troubleshooting
• Strong knowledge of Windows platform/systems
• 2-3 years of field experience monitoring implementations
• 2-3 years' experience in Multi-Platform IT Environments
• Working knowledge of security and security concepts, firewalls and anti-virus
• 2-3 years' experience in Enterprise-Wide Performance Monitoring
• Exposure to architectural concepts such as SOA, ITIL, REST, RIAs, etc.
• Working knowledge of standard industry web servers (Apache, IIS, etc.), java containers (JBoss, Weblogic, tomcat, etc.)
• Working knowledge of database monitoring techniques and common problems (DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Sybase and Informix)
• Foundational knowledge and experience with VMware/ESX, VMS and physical hardware Working knowledge of UNIX, Linux, Network and Systems Management, Basic Availability and Application Performance Monitoring, Systems Administration, Networking, Internet, Systems Integration, Web Security, Performance Tuning, Shell Scripts, Transaction Scripting, Database Administration, Disaster Recovery, Database Schema, Centralized/Distributed Computing Architectures, Agent Technology and Service Level Management.
• Web Knowledge: Security Architectures, HTTP/HTTPS, SSL, LDAP, HTML, Web Servers: Apache, IIS.
• Familiarity with key servers/encryption, PKI/certificates, JAVA, APIs, and browsers.
• Application Servers: Basic knowledge of IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic, Tomcat, and .NET.
• Web Security: Some knowledge of Windows Policy Management, Access Control, Entitlements, Single Sign-on, Authentication, Authorization, Auditing, Threat Detection, and Administration.
• Networking: TCP/IP, and familiarity with firewalls, hubs, routers, switches, DNS, gateways, load balancing and basic network analysis/troubleshooting.
• Network Management knowledge in the areas of configuration, troubleshooting, SNMP configuration and security, performance monitoring/reporting, packet capture and analysis.
• Systems Management knowledge in the areas of Alarm/Event Management, Reporting, Infrastructure/Application Performance Monitoring.
• Database knowledge should include some knowledge of administration, installation and configuration for Oracle/MS SQL Server/DB2/MySQL and connectivity. RDBMS knowledge should include DB schema, DB troubleshooting, & SQL (queries).
• Cross-Platform Knowledge: Strong knowledge for Windows and working knowledge for Linux (RedHat, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu and/or Fedora), Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX. Some AS/400 and Novell if applicable.
