Explain SQL server architecture
Candidate should be able to explain the components involved in the architecture(Storage engine, buffer manager,buffer pool,lock manager,query processor,SQL OS layer and protocol layer) .
Performance tuning at OS and SQL server level.
Should be able to talk about counter that needs to be selected in profiler trace and OS level counters.
Should tell you wait types and execution plans and statistics.
Explain transaction log architecture
Should talk about virtual log file, checkpoint,active portion\inactive portion etc
Memory architecture
should talk about AWE,32 bit vs 64 bit machines,capping memory etc
High availability
Should be familiar with Replication, clustering and always on feature of SQL server
Active\active cluster, differences between cluster architecture of 2005,2008 and 2012 version
Development:
What is normalization?
what is Table partitioning?
horizontal vs vertical
creating stored procedure, triggers etc,
tuning slow running queries, entity relationship, primary key and foreign key relationship, making ER diagram
Isolation levels and their meaning.
